Social Media Post Insulting Prophet Mohammad Triggers Protests at NIT Srinagar; Classwork Suspended Amid Growing Tensions

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V K Birdi, said that the controversial content was not originally created by the student but was sourced from YouTube. However, he acknowledged that the post had caused offense and hurt religious feelings.

Classwork came to a halt at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar on Wednesday following intense protests triggered by a student’s controversial social media post. Officials announced the suspension of all academic activities, including classes, examinations, and administrative work, in response to the unrest.
In a notification issued by the in-charge Registrar of NIT Srinagar, Atikur Rehman, it was confirmed that the suspension would be in effect until further notice.
The protests erupted on Tuesday in reaction to a student’s social media post that was allegedly made by a non-local student targeting Prophet Mohammad.
The demonstrators, demanding stringent action against the non-local student responsible, blocked both entrances of the institution located in the Nigeen area of the city. Slogans were raised within the campus, reflecting the intensity of the agitation. The accused student in was sent home on leave.

“The police have received a written complaint from the NIT registrar urging legal action. We have taken legal action under relevant sections of the law. The investigation is going on,” stated IGP Birdi.
